How SaaS Works
A plain-language guide to what building a SaaS product actually involves, from idea to launch and beyond.
You have an idea
Most SaaS products start with a business problem, a process that's too slow, a gap in the market, or an opportunity to serve a specific group of people. The idea doesn't need to be fully formed. It needs to be real. If there's a genuine problem or need, there's usually a software product worth exploring.
We understand the product
Before any design or code, we work to understand what the software actually needs to do. This means understanding who will use it, what actions they need to take, what business rules it needs to enforce, and what the outcomes should be. The better we understand the product, the better we can build it.
- Who are the users?
- What do they need to do?
- What business rules apply?
- What does success look like?
- What integrations are needed?
We design the system
A SaaS product has multiple layers: a frontend that users interact with, a backend that processes logic and data, a database, an authentication system, APIs, and often an administration interface. Designing the system means deciding how these layers connect and how they'll serve the product's needs.
- Frontend architecture
- Backend design
- Database structure
- Authentication & access control
- API design
- Admin interface
- Third-party integrations
We build it
This is the development phase, where the actual application is written. Frontend, backend, integrations, and any AI or automation capabilities are built according to the system design. Building is typically done in stages, allowing for feedback and refinement along the way.
We prepare it for production
Code on a developer's computer is very different from software running for real customers. Production preparation involves testing, setting up infrastructure, configuring backups, establishing monitoring, and applying security practices appropriate to the product.
- Testing
- Deployment configuration
- Infrastructure setup
- Security practices
- Monitoring & alerting
- Backup systems
- Performance review
We launch it
Launch is when the software becomes available to the people it was built for: customers, employees, or partners. A launch isn't just flipping a switch. It involves coordination, communication, and making sure the software behaves correctly under real conditions.
We keep it running
Software requires ongoing attention. Bugs appear, dependencies need updating, infrastructure needs monitoring, and sometimes things break. Etariosk can manage the operational side of the software, keeping it running, addressing issues, and handling the technical maintenance.
- Bug fixes
- Dependency updates
- Infrastructure management
- Monitoring & response
- Performance maintenance
We expand it
A SaaS product rarely stays the same. Users request new features. New integrations become necessary. The business adds capabilities: a mobile app, AI features, an API, a new tier of the product. Etariosk can continue building the software as the product grows.
- New features
- Mobile applications
- AI integrations
- Additional APIs
- New user tiers
- Scaling
Not every project involves every step. Some clients come with an existing product and need specific improvements. Some need a backend built for an app already in design. We work with the actual situation.
